Flaming Gorge – Day 1

Flaming Gorge – Day 1

Cody and I decided to use the long Memorial Day weekend to get out of town and head to the mountains. We drove away from the city, passed through the desert, and ended up at Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area.

We drove down a dirt road and found a campsite that fit our tastes perfectly: secluded, no RV noise, no restrooms/showers/groups of people, and no fee. Just a free patch of ground to plop our tent and roast some hot dogs. The gurgling stream was an extra perk.

We strung up the hammock, pitched the tent in case of rain (we planned to sleep outside under the stars) and made our new home nice and cozy.

We decided to stretch our legs before dinner. We hiked down the dirt road, gaping over the flowers, and inhaling the deliciously fresh air.

Acting like idiots and hamming around, wrestling and racing, worked up quite an appetite, so we ambled back to camp to start a fire. We certainly had no shortage of food, and the chicken enchiladas I’d made heated up perfectly in their foil wrappers.

We stayed up late, watching the fire burn low. Then we retreated to the warmth of our sleeping bags. The night was cloudy but without rain, so we slept outside, falling asleep to the sound of the river. The perfect start to our weekend getaway.
